How do we create polymers |

The reaction process can produce chain of various length. The polymer
length can range from view monomers (oligomers) to many thousands of monomers. Many
of the chains have a backbone of carbon atoms.
In computer simulations of polymers one usually does not deal with poly-dispersity. All polymers are considered to have the same length. |

Depending on how the reaction is set up, many topologies can be obtained. The linear chains can link to form networks with few connections between the chains (gels) or link very strongly to form rubber-like material (elastomers). The linkage can also be between different polymers to form block-co-polymers. Later on we will also look at the mixing of polymers to form novel materials. | ||
